'Game of Thrones' author talks season two battles

On writing an episode of season two: “It’s very tough because we don’t have the budget to do the battle in the book. We just don’t…”
On whether this show is feminist or sexist: “…I think it’s good people were debating those points …I tried to provide a variety of female characters. With all my characters, I try to show that we’re all human.”
On changes he liked: “I loved the interplay between Varys and Littlefinger, which never occurred in the books since neither is a viewpoint character. I loved the scene of Drogo ripping out Mago’s throat… But that’s going to have ramifications if we go the full length down the pike. This is the challenge the shows face as we go forward. There will be divergences, they’re trying to be faithful and [Game of Thrones producers] David Benioff and Dan Weiss are doing a wonderful job. But the books are plotted so intricately that you do step on a butterfly in season one and in season four you’re going to have to deal with that.”
And what he missed: “I wish the tournament was much bigger … This is like the Super Bowl in the books and draws people from all over the Seven Kingdoms.”
On whether the pace of the series will eventually surpass the books: “There’s two questions here. The first is: How long will it take me to write the next book? Will Winds of Winter go smoothly or is it going to be Feast and Dance all over again? I certainly hope it’s not the latter. The other issue is: What is what is HBO going to do if we get a third season and beyond?…”

'Game of Thrones' Book Seven to be Series' End

Speaking in a new interview, Martin (whose fifth book in the series entitled A Dance with Dragons will hit stores in July) reaffirmed what he has said a few times in the past -- that he is still hoping to have his series end with the seventh book:
"Yes. Seven kingdoms, seven gods, seven books. Seven seems fitting, but until I get out of book six, I’m not sure. I won’t have a chance to start working on book six until next year."

HBO Defends 'Game of Thrones' last night's shocker

HBO executives knew what they were getting into when they took on Thrones, and programming president Sue Naegle says axing Ned Stark made the show creatively more attractive. “I loved it,” Naegle says. “The book series was filled with unexpected twists and turns. I loved this idea we’d bring together the group of characters, then once you started to believe all the tropes of heroes, you pull the rug out from under them. It’s the opposite of feeling manipulated.”
The story and world of Thrones, Naegle says, is bigger than any one character. “Sean brings a giant following,” she says, “but Thrones is not just about the promise you’re going to see one of your favorite actors week in and week out. The star is the story.”

Maisie Williams Talks 'Game of Thrones'

"Mom lets me watch all of it," Williams, 13, admits to TVGuide.com. "I usually cover my eyes for some parts because it's a bit embarrassing, but it's just acting at the end of the day. And I've seen how the beheading was done and things like that. It looks scary, but I know in real life it was not bad."
Despite being exposed to the rather adult situations, Williams remains refreshingly unjaded and identifies with her spirited character.
"I describe Arya as quite feisty, a tomboy," she says. "She likes to break the rules and doesn't really like being how everyone thinks she should be. I like playing outside and messing around. When I was in primary school my best friend was a boy and we always goofed around, climbed trees, got holes in my trousers and muddied all my tops and things like that, a complete nightmare for the washing, but great fun. I would always put a bit of Maisie into everything."
Arya's biggest antagonist is her much more feminine and refined older sister, Sansa, played by Arya's real-life friend Sophie Turner. Sansa is blindly devoted to the spoiled and corrupt Prince Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) and even lied to protect him once.
"Arya thinks of Sansa as a bit iffy, sort of clueless as to what's going on around her," Williams explains. "She finds Sansa annoying as she's always going on about princes and marrying and having children and Arya just thinks all that's way, way in the future. It's a waste of time. Joffrey is not very nice and she can see that, but Sansa can't. Arya is definitely trying to get through to people what she knows, but sometimes it's not always the best way and she gets into trouble."

Thrones viewership was … unchanged. Another 2.4 million viewers for its premiere airing and a total of 3.2 million for the night, including the repeat. What’s vaguely still impressive about this: Overall TV viewership for the night was down 21 percent due to the holiday.
